Synthesis

Initial Post (November 20th): To practice for your final paper, pick one of the theses (how desire leads to education or how education leads to desire), and list ONE reason, at least two pieces of evidence (quote or paraphrase) from different sources, and your analysis of how the two relate to your thesis.

Example:

Thesis: Desire leads to education

Reason: In an effort to succeed in school, often times students will sacrifice personal relationships for their education.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks separated herself from the seemingly frivilous desires of her white roommates at her first college and, instead, "lived in the world of books" (1).
Evidence 1.2: "I devoted myself entirely to my studies. I became bookish, puzzling to all my family. Ambition set me apart" (Rodriguez 17).
Analysis: Hooks and Rodriguez both distanced themselves from interpersonal bonds in favor of their book world, which helped focus their desire for education.

Reply to classmate (Due November 22nd): give your classmate a quote that might help them to further prove their Reason or to fulfill their analysis.

Example:

What about using, "[Stanford] was the place for me to go--a place where intellect was valued over foolish fun and games and dress up" (hooks 2) as one piece of evidence to support your final analysis?

DO NOT just tell your classmate s/he did a good job with his/her post.

  1. Thesis: Desire leads to education
Reason: In order to succeed in school, many students will have to choose between family ties and higher education.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks had lamented on going to Stanford with or without her father’s permission or her mamas help, but “Without their permission, I decided I would go.” (3)
Evidence 1.2. “I became more tactful, careful to keep separate the two very different worlds of of the day.” (Rodriguez 17)
Analysis: Hooks and Rodriguez knew their destiny, was tied to their education and had to keep them separate as they would clash and hinder their education

    1. Kevin,
When I read your reason I first thought of this part of Hooks essay when she calls her mother when she first arrives at Stanford, "She told me this is the lot I had chosen. I must live with it. After her words, there was only silence. She had hung up on me -- let me go into this world where I am a stranger still" (4). This is a very clear physical separation that her mother makes with Hooks. The fact that she does not choose to go home and instead faced her fear and stayed at Stanford speaks clearly to the fact that she made a choice between her family and her education.

You made a very good connection between the two essays. You started with clearly stated evidence statements. However, I think there are several more evidence points that you could pull out if you needed to.

    2. Hi Kevin, here is something I found in paragraph 13 of the Rodriguez essay, I think it could be some good supporting evidence for your reason.
"Gradually, necessarily, the balance is lost. The boy needs to spend more and more time studying, each night enclosing himself in the silence permitted and required by intense consentration. He takes his first step toward academic success, and away from his family" (19).

  2. Thesis: Education leads to desire.

Reason: In an effort to become their authentic selves adults will often re-examine difficult times in their pasts in an effort to learn from those experiences.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks discovered she "felt too much uncertainty about who I had become," by the time she had finished her doctorate (5).
Evidence 1.2: "Uncertain about whether I had managed to make it through without giving up the best of myself" (Hooks 5).
Evidence 1.3: Rodriquez realizes that Hoggart explains some of his experiences growing up and helps him make sense of them. "For the first time I realized that there were other students like me, and so I was able to frame the meaning of my academic success, its consequent price -- the loss" (Rodriquez 17).
Evidence 1.4: "I intended to hurt my mother and father," Rodriquez is connecting his actions and his emotions from when he was younger to their true reasons (20).
Analysis: Rodriquez and Hooks are both able to look back on a somewhat difficult life as they were growing into adulthood. At this time they were making tough choices but not fully capable of understanding the true reasons why. Now they are able to learn from those choices and their consequences, positive and negative.

    1. Another form of analysis could be their desire for education clouded their judgment and the affect it had on their family, and once you go down a path it is easier to go forward than backward (unless you have a Tardis)

  3. Thesis: Education leads to desire
Reason: When a person self-reflects about their life they realize that they want more than just what they have now.
Evidence 1.1: There were times when Hook felt alienated, even when she was around people who were students of the same demographic back round as herself. "Still i looked for connections," her place to belong among society. (5)
Evidence 1.2: At a time that Rodriguez was a kid he wanted to be apart of the families familiar rituals. "Instead of the flood of intimate sounds that had once flowed smoothly between us, there was this silence." (Rodriguez, 21).
Analyze: Upon Hook and Rodriguez try to find a niche where they don't have to be alone.

    1. Another good example is how Hooks never took part in any graduation ceremony (5). She had tried so hard to retain her identity she could not feel the pride or desire to accept the accolades of her peers and teachers.

  4. Thesis: Education leads to desire
Reason: We often yearn for the connections we sacrifice in the pursuit of education.
Evidence 1.1: When Rodriguez speaks of of his success in school he remarks how, "schooling was changing me and separating me for the life I enjoyed before becoming a student" (17)
Evidence 1.2: Later when he speaks of relationship with his mother, "[There was] Silence! Instead of the flood of intimate sounds that had once flowed smoothly between us, there was silence" (Rodriguez 21).
Evidence 1.3: "I called home. Before I could speak, I began to weep as I heard the faraway sound of mama's voice" (Hooks 4).
Evidence 1.4: Hooks speaks about how she is, "Uncertain about whether I had managed to make it through without giving up the best of myself" (5).
Analyze: Both Hooks and Rodriguez gave up a part of themselves when they took the path of education. This sacrifice made them more aware of the importance of family and cultural values they were raised with.

    1. You could also use, Rodriguez and Hooks desire there emotional goals more than there relationship with people. You did a good job identifying your evidence.

  5. Thesis: Desire leads to education
Reason: We often separate ourselves from family and friends to pursue in are college dreams.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks decided she was going to Standford whether or not she got her father's approval. "Without their approval I decided I would go"(3).
Evidence 1.2: Rodriguez decided in order to separate himself from family life, he has to try to let go of his past(17).
Analyze: Hooks and Rodriguez both knew what they wanted in life and knew in order to succeed education was a must.
