I know, it's not the "I Have a Dream" speech, but not everyone is Dr. King, but people make speeches all of the time for different reasons that can be inspiring (or not, depending on how you interpret each message).
For your initial response: determine the Audience, Purpose and Occasion for the following video, and then note whether or not Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech, and how he uses the elements you identify. Finally, say whether or not you think he was effective in his speech, and why (ex. how did he format his speech to help build his logos or ethos? How could he have better formatted his speech and why?).
In your reply: ask your classmate a question about his/her post regarding his/her thought-process regarding one or more of the determinations he/she makes (ex. "Do you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Awards or were they the people sitting at home?).
Ashton Kutcher is accepting an award on the Teen Choice Awards. He starts by acknowledging his fans and acknowledging that he wouldn't be where he is without them. They would be his target audience, however anyone could be his audience. His purpose is encouragement and motivation of young people. He uses logos when he talks about hard work and that one has to start somewhere. He points out that he was never too good for any job and that each job was a step up from the last. This could also be considered ethos as he's speaking from personal experience. He also uses pathos when he talks about sex appeal; everyone wants to be sexy. He also defines it in characteristics that will help them throughout life such as being smart, thoughtfulness, and being generous.
ReplyDeleteWhen you were thinking of pathos how did you come to the conclusion that sex appeal was an emotion to connect to the audience with?
DeleteMost people have a desire to feel sexy or beautiful, particularly young people. Ashton is speaking to this desire when he talks about being sexy.
DeleteIn this speech by Ashton Kutcher is begins his speech thanking his fans for his popularity. He continues with a short list the jobs he held, and how they made him better. He even explained he was never better than the jobs, and that he learned from them. His explanation of what sexy was was not what most people would think he would say. His audience was not just the teens in the audience or watching on tv, but to everyone. His universal appeal among the age groups gives him credibility. He used a combination of ethos, pathos and logos in this speech. He used ethos when he detailed his job history, showing he didn’t come about fame without really working. He used logos in showing how being smart was sexy and hard work makes you better. His use of pathos showed thru when he proclaimed that his real first name was Chris not Ashton. Most stars hide their real names for fear of being labeled normal or unusual. He even said he did his best growth as Chris and not Ashton. His growth as Ashton came from his fans and not him. I actually thought it was a very good speech and very motivational. Every kid who is a fan of Ashton, might actually think about working to build character instead of it being handed to them.

ReplyDeleteAs Ashton Kutcher is receiving a Teen Choice Award, he gives a speech thanking his fans and offering them inspirational advice. Though specifically aimed at teenagers and young adults, his speech extends to a wide audience: the live audience at the awards, and television and Internet viewers of any age.
ReplyDeleteKutcher uses a combination of ethos, logos and pathos during his speech. His ethos is his reputation as a successful celebrity. This is the foundation for his speech. Kutcher uses pathos early in his speech when he makes a joke, and says, “I don’t have a career without you guys”. He builds an emotional connection with the audience. Using ethos he tells the audience about his path to success and states that “Opportunities look a lot like work”. Kutcher uses logos as he advises youth to “build a life”. Citing Steve Jobs for this concept, he reasons, “Everything around us that we call life, was made up by people that are no smarter than you.”
I think Ashton Kutcher formatted his speech well. It was no mistake that he used pathos at the beginning of his speech. By doing that, he establishes himself as likable, and emotionally draws in the audience. As I am critiquing, I don’t think I would change anything. I can see how his speech would reside well with the targeted audience.
I feel the same you did. He is very likable and he sets up the speech to reach out to others and let them know hard work does pay of. Although the speech felt it, he could have ulterior motives. He has been lambasted lately as egotistical and spiteful. This may have been an attempt to regain some of his zing as an actor. Remember he stated that he was like a grandpa to these kids and had to reconnect with them. He did it in a very sly way. He is a good actor.
DeleteAt the Teen Choice awards Ashton Kutcher goes on stage to accept an award and give a speech. He begins by establishing that he is no better than anyone, even calling himself a fraud one point. Kutcher uses this to strengthen the impact of his message, that intelligence, and hard work are critical to have a good life. He interweaves logos in regards to his own life experiences. As well as pathos of what the main audience of the teen choice awards, youth and young adults, would find appealing to drive his point home. Sadly, he stutters a lot during the entire speech, reducing the impact of the speech overall. This also damages his ethos as an actor.
ReplyDeleteDo you think his stuttering had to do with the cheering that kept occurring throughout, that maybe he had intended to have a more rapt audience? He seemed dismayed as he kept talking past his first point of having a job, and his transition to being sexy in his speech seemed to sputter out as well.
DeleteCould it be that the stuttering was intentional? Maybe an effort to make himself appear more like them, to take a step down from the pedestal fans tend to put celebrities on?
DeleteI never noticed the stuttering until I read this! Well, I would lean towards believing that it does not hurt his ethos.. because like the first part your paragraph says he is establishing himself as no better than anyone, and normal people stutter! What do you think?
DeleteThe audience for Ashton Kutcher speech, which he gave at the teen choice awards is targeted towards his fans and the people who are watching the show. The speech was meant to encourage and relate that he to started out normal and that through his hard work he achieved his success. Used ethos, by thanking his fans for pushing that success to the fame he now has, and states that without them he wouldn't have gotten that for without them. Logos, by describing the various kinds of hard work he had done at and early age and has learned from them. Pathos, by stating that he feels a fraud when his real name is not Ashton but, Chris and through being Chris it has helped him to become that actor he is now.
ReplyDeleteAshton has made a great speech through the combination of ethos, logos, and pathos. Early in the beginning the use of pathos to establish an emotional connections with the audience making the audience more sympathetic towards him. I would not change his speech for i think this is the best format he could have possibly used.
First off, I want to say that I found this to be a very well written post. Do you feel Kutcher was just going after his fans and people watching the show for his audience? It felt to me he was casting a wider net than that.
DeleteKutcher is accepting a award at the teen choice awards. He is talking to the audience and the people who were watching the televised show. Kutcher is spreading a message that with hard work you can truly get what you want out of life. When he thanks his fans and tells them that by their support it has helped him get to where he is at his career now, and that's how he uses ethos when giving his speech. Telling his fans of his handwork he has put into his career comes form a place of logos. Pathos is when he admits he is a fraud because his name is really Chris and not Ashton. The speech was well done and portrayed Logos, Pathos, and Ethos very nicely.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think Ashton did in his speech? Do you think it was good or bad?
DeleteChris Kutcher does an excellent job speaking to a daft audience. He was at the Teen Choice Awards, accepting an award, his purpose and occasion respectively. The appeal to ethos by revealing his real name, drawing the crowd into his speech, worked great to set up his points of pathos and logos. He appeals simultaneously to pathos and logos by showing how hard work had made him who he was, and also by expressing how happy he was to be working, and to have ambitions from those jobs to seek better. He keeps on this pathos and logos line by defining sexy as intelligent and compassionate. With a positive tone, he dismisses other concepts of the term sexy. He closes with a statement about building a life, an appeal to logos and ethos, revisiting points on how he became famous and tying into his logic of hard work as necessary. It was a great speech that mostly went ignored by the crowd, who were unable to figure out when to cheer. Based on the feedback he received in the building, I would say that this was the most compelling ignored speech ever.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was a good speech, that was more than likely ignored by the intended audience. Do you think his own "sex appeal" would give him credibility with the younger generation about what sexy is, or should be?
DeleteAshton Kutcher is receiving an award at the Teen Choice Awards. He uses ethos by comparing his jobs he has worked previously to his current life. He compares it by saying he never thought he was to good for that job and would not be where he is now, if it weren't for them. He uses logos also by showing he would not be where he is now without those jobs. His speech also has pathos when he compares sexy to being smart, it really makes people think. It was a great speech, and I think it is mainly toward a younger crowd.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was a good speech. Do you think he is trying to show that it's not unusual for people to have crappy jobs on the path to their perfect career? Which often times is when you are a teen or young adult?
DeleteAshton Kutcher is speaking to teens everywhere, in the audience at the Teen Choice Awards, watching the show live and the millions who will watch it via the internet in the future. He is receiving an important award and this is his acceptance speech. His purpose is to make young people, especially teenagers everywhere, think for themselves and realize that they are smart and capable of doing anything they decide. I believe that he uses ethos to establish himself as a former teen who understands where their headspace is at that time in life. He further built his ethos by pointing out that he is a famous, sex symbol, which has been determined through the years, by us, the general public. Ultimately saying, if you argue with my authority then you are disagreeing with yourself. He also points out that he has been swayed by others along the way. This tells us that he is imperfect just like us which makes him more real and believable to his audience of young people. Then concludes using logos by stating the fact that he has learned these lessons and wants to share them with the young people he knows are smart enough to understand. I do think he was effective with his speech. I liked the way he built his ethos with the audience first. He successfully reminds his entire audience, mainly young people but the older generation who may be watching, that we have elevated him to the celebrity status where he is currently. Then he transitions into logos and tells the audience what he wants them to do and why. Then he ends with a bit of comedy and a reminder to be confident.
